Remembrance Day

Whether you call it Remembrance Day, Poppy Day, Armistice Day or Veterans Day..let us take a few minutes of silence to honor our fallen, veteran and active soldiers!

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

The very first Thanksgiving celebration in Canada took place in 1578, when Martin Frobisher, an explorer from England arrived in Newfoundland, he wanted to give thanks for his safe arrival to the New World.

Thanksgiving was celebrated either in late October or early November, for many hundred years, until it was declared a National Holiday on November 6th, 1879.  On January 31, 1957, the Canadian Parliament announced that it should on the second Monday of October because it coincided in the same week as Remembrance Day which is celebrated on November 11th.  It was then declared that Thanksgiving would be “a day of general thanksgiving to almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed.”

So why isn’t the Canadian Thanksgiving not celebrated at the same time as in the United States? Geographically speaking, Canada is further north (O’ Canada! The True North strong and free!..sorry had to get that one out!), which means that the harvest season arrives earlier than the United States. Also, since the Canadian tradition is more about giving thanks for the harvest season, opposed to the arrival of pilgrims for the American tradition.

One thing that does not change, no matter where you live in North America… everyone celebrates with parades, with their family and we all get stuffed eating turkey and pumpkin pie!

What did you do this year for Thanksgiving?

Federal Copyright Act

The Canadian government is looking to reform the country’s Copyright Act, this new legislation could have a profound impact on the ways and means archivists, interact with both their users and their collections when it comes to making the latter accessible to the former. Mrs.  Nancy Marrelli, Chair of the CCA’s Copyright Committee, is working to inform the government, through the consultative process,

The ACA (Association fo Canadian Archivists) will be making a submission on behalf of its membership as a whole, and while hopes this will add weight and substance to Mrs. Marrelli’s effort, it will be equally vital if you, individually, can lend your voice as well.

Below is the plan of action that Mrs. Marrellihas laid out, please take a few moments to read her message which the key phrase is ”that we are asking for amendment of the Canadian Copyright Act to include a technologically neutral access right to archival holdings, permitting archives to make archival holdings accessible to the public using digital technology, including the Internet.”

The deadline for such a submission is 13 September 2009, so I urge you to act quickly.

I wish to thank Mr. Paul Banfield, President of the Association of Canadian Archivists, for sending this message to all their members!
